According to the estimated global cost of corrosion is about US$ 2.5 trillion in accordance with the "International Measures of Prevention, Application and Economics of Corrosion Technology (IMPACT)" study released by NACE in 2016. This cost is equivalent to roughly 3.4 percent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The biggest portion of which is stemmed from the corrosion of steel. On 22-24 May 2019 in Istanbul  will be the first one of the biannual Corrosion and Surface Protection for Steel international symposium / conference series.
